New League Leadership....

Hey Guys and Gals..... I have had a great time with Ballers, but unfortunately I am no longer able to run it. As my kids get into the age where they participate in different activities/sports, I just can't find the time any longer to participate in a monthly event. If someone else would like to keep it going, touch base with me, and I will get you setup. Organization time is minimal (by design), but feel free to run it as you see fit!

Sorry to hear that, Tim. :(

Ballers got me into "league" play, and Chateen and I love the just-hang-out-and-play-pinball atmosphere, and the group it always pulls in. I hope the group keeps rolling, and I hope you can drop in sometime when it does.

Thanks for everything you put into this, Tim! It's a perfect format for me. It's allowed me to get out and play when I can with friends with a minimal commitment and in a fun environment.

I have my hands too full to take on "everything". I think there's opportunity to allow this to run (mostly) autonomously. We can put a minimal amount of responsibility on the hosts to run the actual event (collect money, choose games, etc). I can help to document the information needed.

Kinda? My kids are only 4 and 1, so they're not really "doing" anything yet. I've made almost all the ballers anyway, so don't mind taking over to help out. I'm usually up fairly late anyway, midnight - 1am; and the kids are in bed by 8pm and the wife by 9 - 10pm; leaving my a few hours every night of free time. Usually that's been repairing games, working on basement, etc...

Enjoy this next chapter in your life Tim! Haven't been able to make many Ballers events lately but I always looked forward to hanging out with you and laughing my ass off. This site has grown so much, many here might not know that Tim also helped start the Mad City Flipper league. For some of us this is the second time losing Tim. :(

I’m sure at some point we’ll be able to taunt Tim into showing his face. The lure of dollar games is strong. :)

On the "running a tournament" angle, I hadn't heard of this software until just now:

https://matchplay.events

Have you guys seen it? It's free for most features, or $30/yr for a TD to set up additional features (like running PinGolf or Selfie leagues, >32 players, or score submissions from players).

I played around with it a bit, and it looks like the "Group Match Play" format almost matches the Ballers arrangement. The only difference I saw was that your next group is based on overall rankings rather than your last game rankings (so if I placed 4th, 4th, 1st, I would not be in the top group for the last game).

It's web-based and requires an Internet connection, but it does allow everyone to monitor the tournament on their own devices and see standings and such.

The paper works good, but I thought I'd bring it up in case keeping the books in order was a pain point for running an event.

I had actually looked at match play as a solution to paper, but never knew what kind of internet I was going to run into in some of the basements we were playing in, so I just stuck with paper ( I always laughed a little knowing I am an IT guy for a living, and still had to resort to paper when a tech solution existed). I think it is a good solution for sure. I will leave it up to Jay how he wants to run it.

I played around with Match Play when it first launched and had the same general impression. Seems like a perfect way to run a ballers event. I'd actually prefer the rounds based on total so far rather than just last game. Seems more balanced than having the guy who just came in last in a game of winners, then get a near freebie on the next game because he's playing other 4ths. You know? I'd be willing to foot the yearly fee for it if doing so would get any additional features we'd need.

I hear ya on living with cave drawings as an IT guy. For me it manifests as crappy Ethernet runs through air vents, network switches hanging from their own wires, and APs sprinkled throughout the house, sandwiched between bare studs.

Nice thing about paper is, it's a pretty reliable backup. :)
